Search Traffic vs. Social Traffic

by SWP on September 11, 2008

There was an article recently in the Wall Street Journal about internet advertising and how the floundering world economy has affected how businesses are spending their advertising budgets as a result of smaller internet advertising budgets. It was no surprise to me to read that businesses are spending more and more of their internet advertising budgets on search advertising over social traffic.

Guys if you’ve been internet marketing for any length of time then you already know that search traffic = targeted traffic.

So if search traffic is targeted traffic where does that leave social traffic?

I wouldn’t go so far as to describe social traffic as untargeted traffic since most social traffic will reach your site via a banner ad or by clicking on your link on a social site but I would describe it as “non-buying” traffic.

Guys most of the people that are just “surfing the net” aren’t looking to buy something and 9 times out of 10 these are the people that complain about being marketed to and leave your site when they see any signs of advertising.

I don’t know about you but that’s not the type of traffic I’m looking for and judging by the article in The Wall Street Journal, larger businesses are also now discovering that social traffic isn’t “buying-traffic” and while it may be somewhat targeted, it’s not laser targeted and laser targeted is what you need if you want to make a living online.
