The Biggest Lie About Making Money Online in Niches

Just because you’re passionate about something doesn’t mean you’ll be able to earn a living doing it.

I always get a good laugh whenever I hear or read an internet marketing alleged guru advise someone new to making money online to:

“Do what you’re passionate about and the money will follow.”

Personally I enjoy watching sports and eating good food but try as I may (and have) I still can’t get people to pay me for these things that I “enjoy” and it’s foolish for you to think that just because you enjoy something that you should be paid for doing it.

Sure it’s important to be passionate about what you’re choosing to do to make money online but it’s probably even more important to find a hungry market that’s willing to pay for the products or services you’re willing to offer.

Go ahead and build a Blog around a topic that you’re passionate about but if you want to make money on that Blog then I would advise the following:

  1. Make a list of the keywords people will be searching for to find your site and the products, content or services you offer
  2. Check to see how often those keyword terms and phrases are searched for. Here’s a good free tool to use: Seo Book Keyword Tools. Basically you want to make sure people are actually searching for the keywords and keyword phrases you will be targeting before you start investing your time.
  3. Check around and look for affiliate programs that have products you might be able to promote to readers of your Blog. A few affiliate programs you might want to look into are: Commission Junction, COPEAC, Never Blue Ads and ClickBank.
  4. Ok so you have keyword terms and phrases that people are searching for now you want to check out your competition. So you’ll want to go to Google and do a keyword search for your targeted terms and make a not of the first 10-20 sites. Then go to this site here: Backlink Watch and do a backlink search for the 10-20 sites you just noted down. That site will give you a good list of most of the backlinks that are pointing to the website that you entered. You can also do a Google search like this (site: enter the name of the website with extension) to do a Google search for backlinks to your competitors sites. Personally I use Keyword Elite and SEO Elite by Brad Callen for my keyword and seo research and suggest you do the same once you get some scratch together (they’re $176 each). But they’ll save you a lot of time imo and they’re alot more accurate…
  5. The final step if you want to rank for your targeted terms is to acquire more inbound links with more value then your competitors sites so you can usurp them in the search engines.

I just started a new Blog that details how to generate website traffic and create inbound links… you can check it out here: Strategic Website Traffic.

Anyhow so there you have it…

It’s just not as easy as building a website in a niche you’re passionate about or interested in and POOF you’re rich… it just doesn’t happen that way online and anybody who tells you it does is trying to scam you out of your money.
